Kansas Energy Council

KEC History

The Kansas Energy Council (KEC) was established by Governor Kathleen Sebelius on June 1, 2004, in Executive Order 04-05. In subsequent Executive Orders (06-06, 06-13, and 07-16), Governor Sebelius reformulated the Council’s membership; currently, the KEC has 35 members.

The KEC replaced the State Energy Resources Coordination Council (SERCC), which was established in 2002 by former Governor Graves.

In December of 2003, Governor Sebelius requested the formation of a special task force to study and make recommendations relating to the siting of wind-power projects in the Flint Hills/Tallgrass Prairie region of Kansas. This lead to the formation of the Wind and Prairie Task Force (WPTF) in early 2004. With the delivery of its report in June 2004, the task force was disbanded.

In December of 2005, the Kansas Energy Council adopted a 12-month planning process and a draft outline for a Kansas Energy Plan.
