FutureGen Information

FutureGen is a combined Department of Energy and industry effort to build a 275-megawatt, near-zero emissions, coal-fired plant that will gasify coal to produce electricity and hydrogen. The $1 billion project will employ the latest technology and serve as a large-scale engineering laboratory for testing new clean power, carbon dioxide capture, and coal-to-hydrogen technologies.

On March 5, 2004, KEC sponsored an open forum to discuss FutureGen and what it would take to bring the project to Kansas. More than 30 industry, utility, government, university, and other representatives attended the meeting and were unanimous that Kansas should try to compete for this project. KEC is currently working to organize such an effort.
